I apologize for the long delay in replying to your letter. Here are answers to your questions.
1/ Tenzing Norgay was a Sherpa born in the Mt. Everest area. He was an excellent mountaineer. He died 3 years ago at the age of 72 in Darjeeling, India.
2/ Sir Vivian Fuchs’ expedition was the first to cross the Antarctic Continent. My expedition was the first to reach the South Pole with vehicles.
3/ Our climb on Mt. Makalu has nothing to do with the Abominable Snowman. However we investigated the Yeti in the Rolwaling and Khumbu valleys and came to the conclusion that it was a mythological creature.
I enclose a signed photograph.
Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, in Hillary’s hand.
Also accompanied by the signed 3.5×5 signed photograph mentioned by Hillary.
Great letter with uncommon direct reference to his climbing partner, Tenzing.
