Autograph letter signed “E Rutherford”, embossed stationery from “Newnham Cottage, Queen's Road, Cambridge”, May 28, 1928, in part:
With reference to your inquiry, I would be present to receive the Albert Medal on the date proposed July 19. I will reply formally when I receive a statement….
Ernest Rutherford received the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts in 1928 for his contributions to science and technology, particularly in the field of radioactivity and atomic structure. The Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts was established in 1864 as a memorial to Prince Albert and is awarded for "distinguished merit in promoting Arts, Manufactures and Commerce".
Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) was a New Zealand-born British physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. He was the central figure in the study of radioactivity, and with his concept of the nuclear atom he led the exploration of nuclear physics. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908, was president of the Royal Society (1925–30) and the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1923), was conferred the Order of Merit in 1925, and was raised to the peerage as Lord Rutherford of Nelson in 1931.
