Garfield”, July 26, 1879, 7.5×11, House of Representatives letterhead but sent from Mentor, Ohio, addressed to “Mrs. Lieber”, widow of Dr. Francis Lieber who was one of the leading political philosophers of 19th-century America and a frequent correspondent with Garfield, in part:
I forward you by express the book with correspondence between Dr. Lieber and myself. You will find occasionally a word left out… am glad to be able to contribute in any way to the Biography of so great and good a man as your late husband. My correspondence with him is among the most pleasant recollections of the past…
