Ronald Reagan Handwritten Note on White House Stationery - "A True Friend In Every Sense Of The Word"
40th President. Autograph statement (not signed), penned at the conclusion of a typed memo on White House notepaper, 5×8, regarding a story planned about Michael Deaver, Reagan's Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House.
The typed portion of the memo reads, in full: "Mr. President: Trudy Fellman [sic, Trude Feldman] is doing a special story on Mike Deaver. She is interviewing Nancy Reynolds, Helene [von Damm], etc. Helene called and asked if you would be interested in stating a few short sentences about what Mike's relationship over the years has meant to you -- to be used in the interview."
Reagan writes beneath the memo in black ink:
Mike Deaver came into our lives (Nancy's & mine) back in the early days of my 1st term as Gov. He was on the staff but a personal relationship grew into real friendship that is a permanent part of our lives.
In the years after I left the Gov.'s office we had a business relationship in that I became the 1st client of the public relation firm Mike established with a partner. Now of course he is here next to the Oval Office.
What can I say beyond the fact that we are close friends, our familys [sic] are close and Mike has never been anything but a true friend in every sense of the word.
Michael Deaver (1938-2007) began working for Ronald Reagan during Reagan's first term as governor of California. He served as Reagan's Deputy Chief of Staff from 1981-1985.
Gertrude "Trude" Bella Feldman (1924-2022) was an American reporter and member of the White House Press Corps. She interviewed every president from Lyndon B. Johnson to George W. Bush. Feldman interviewed Reagan on January 28, 1986, the same day that the space shuttle Challenger disintegrated after liftoff.
In very good condition, with just a fine line of green ink penned at top margin.
Impeccable provenance: this item comes from the files of Helene von Damm (b. 1938), Reagan's longtime personal secretary and later Ambassador to Austria.
