Theodore Roosevelt 1918 World War-I Dated Typed Letter Signed - "My Son Archie Was Pretty Badly Wounded"
26th President. Amazing typed letter signed “Theodore Roosevelt”, April 16, 1918, Kansas City Star New York Office letterhead, to Captain Charles Bull of the American Expeditionary Force in France in care of Major John C. Greenway, in full:
Your two letters have come: but, you old scamp, you have not given me any address, so I am sending this to Jack Greenway. Both of your letters were most interesting. I look forward to seeing Lieutenant Langworthy. Dave Goodrich and I held a meeting devoting especial attention to you, the other afternoon, at the Harvard Club. You probably know that my son Archie was pretty badly wounded.
Several amendations in TR’s own hand.
A most interesting letter importantly mentioning his son Archie Roosevelt’s injury suffered while fighting the war with the U.S. 1st Infantry Division - a wound so severe that he was discharged from the Army with full disability.
The letter also has very close ties to TR’s service as the leader of the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War as several men mentioned in the letter were members of his lauded group of Rough Riders - the Rough Riders picture from Camp Wikoff that we show shows David Marvin Goodrich, John Campbell Greenway, and Colonel Theodore Roosevelt among others. There is also a copy of an earlier letter from TR concerning Bull where he states: “He was one of the best men in my regiment during the Spanish War.”
